Pickleball Rules Explained Simply (Even If You’ve Never Played Before)

Pickleball is fast becoming one of the most popular sports in Singapore. With courts popping up at community centres, condos, and ActiveSG facilities, it's no surprise that more and more people are picking up a paddle and jumping into the game. But if you’re new, the rules might seem confusing at first — don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s a simple, no-fluff guide to pickleball rules, perfect for first-time players.

🏅 The Basics: What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s usually played in doubles (2v2) on a small court with a low net, using paddles and a perforated plastic ball.

It’s beginner-friendly, low impact, and crazy fun. Once you try it, you’ll get hooked.

🔢 Pickleball Rules Made Simple

1. Scoring

  • Games go to 11 points, win by 2.

  • Only the serving team can score.

  • In doubles, both teammates serve before the serve switches sides (except at the start).

2. Serving

  • Underhand serve only.

  • Serve diagonally across the court.

  • Ball must clear the kitchen (non-volley zone).

3. Double Bounce Rule

  • After the serve, each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys.

4. The Kitchen Rule (Non-Volley Zone)

  • The 7-foot zone near the net is called the kitchen.

  • You can’t volley (hit without bouncing) while standing in it.

  • You can step in to hit a ball that has bounced.

5. Faults

  • Hitting the ball out of bounds

  • Volleying in the kitchen

  • Not following the double-bounce rule

  • Serve that doesn't land in the correct area
